While many fans were expecting or hoping The Legend of Conan would be Arnold’s next film, in a surprise move, everyone’s favorite action hero has decided to get back into comedy! Schwarzenegger had major success with Twins, Kindergarten Cop and even had critical praise for his performance in Junior. It’s amazing to think that Arnold, who is actually hilarious on screen, has not done a comedy in 20 years (Jingle All the Way in1996)! And while critics may not have enjoyed 1993’sLast Action Hero, most Schwarzenegger fans consider the film to be far ahead of its time and one of his all-time best comedies.
Since Arnold’s return to his movie career, post Governorship, he’s done many action films but also filmed two small independent dramas, including Maggie and the winter release of 478. So after these two dramas, Arnold’s newest project, "Why We’re Killing Gunther” comes as a big relief to fans who miss our "Arnold Braunschweiger,” the famous comedian! Better yet, this film will be an action/comedy so expect some great action scenes with a bigger budget than his earlier independent flicks.
The story focuses on a group of eccentric international assassins who become fed up with Gunther (Schwarzenegger), the world's greatest hitman who also happens to be an arrogant show-off, and decide to kill him. Their master plan, however, quickly turns into a series of embarrassing encounters as Gunther always appears one step ahead.
Why We’re Killing Gunther will be directed by Saturday Night Live star Taran Killam, making his directorial debut. Killam also wrote the script and will star in the ensemble along with his wife, actress Cobie Smulders, SNL’s Bobby Moynihan, Paul Brittain, Kumail Nanjiani, Randall Park and Ryan Gaul.
A June start date for Gunther is being discussed. If Gunther is a 3 month shoot, when is the earliest we can hope The Legend of Conan goes into production? Let’s hope Arnold will be back in the Cimmerian saddle by December. Once again, it’s exciting times for Arnold and the fans! Looking forward to the good Gunther laughs and over-the-top action!
