The much anticipated collaborative effort between DMG Entertainment, StudioCanal and James Cameron for the 3D release of Terminator 2 seems to be edging nearer to release with a release window of early 2017 set for China, while a distributor for a worldwide release is also being looked into. Terminator 2: Judgement Day was never released theatrically in cinemas in China yet it went on to sell positively on DVD.

This is of course not Terminator 2’s first foray into 3D as Terminator 2 3D: Battle Across Time released in 1996 as a 12 minute experience presented at Universal Studios so hopefully the full 3D conversion of Terminator 2 can achieve the current equivalent of the same quality of immersion.

It is understood that the 3D and 4K overhaul of Terminator 2 may even have already been completed as there was an option for it to be released within the final quarter of 2016, although it was decided against due to the overwhelming amount of Hollywood blockbuster films releasing in the same time frame.

James Cameron is certainly box office material in China with Avatar making $200 million in China even before the greater uptake of blockbuster films within China, while the 3D re-release of Titanic made near $150 million and Terminator Genisys made close to $115 million even without James Cameron’s involvement in the film. James Cameron combined with Arnold Schwarzenegger and the fact that Terminator 2 made $519.8 million in the worldwide box office when originally released in cinemas suggests that the updated Terminator 2 should be a huge success in China and anywhere else it eventually releases.
