While "Escape Plan" was not the number one film in the American Box Office this past weekend, there has been a lot of positive feedback and triumphs for the movie, starring our very own Numero Uno Arnold, alongside fellow industry vet Sylvester Stallone.
You want the good news, or the bad news, fans? The bad: we only made "Escape Plan" $9.8 million in ticket sales in the U.S. The good news is that the film may have already made half of its money back considering the budget is now reportedly at 50 million. After the good overseas performances, that puts the first week's total at nearly 24 million for the worldwide box office. Brookes Barns of the New York Times spoke with an anonymous source who worked on the movie who stated rumors of a $70 million budget are not true but it was close to 50 million. More good news: In this next week, we have a lot of time to make up for it by getting out to theaters and seeing the movie again, or seeing it for the first time, if you missed opening weekend!
Regarding those international grosses, 'Escape Plan' placed first in Lebanon and Malaysia and second in Russia with a $3 million debut from 690 screens. 'Escape Plan' opened in third place in the U.K. with a $1.5 million bow from 362 screens … 'Escape Plan' has grossed $14.1 million overseas and $23.6 million worldwide.
On the media side of the reviews, some memorable praise comes from Justin Craig of FoxNews who states: "Leave it to Sly and Arnie to keep the old-school action-adventure alive. Their latest outing 'Escape Plan' is almost antiquated compared to today’s action films, but you know what? We needed it. 'Escape Plan' is a throwback to the well-executed, tongue-in-cheek actioners of the early ‘90s."
Emily Longeretta of HollywoodLife.com says: "After you see the non-stop action mixed with the witty one-liners from these vets, you’ll leave the theater wanting more." Perhaps the most poignant media review for the film is from SFGate's Mick LaSalle, who writes: "'Escape Plan' pairs Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger in roles they could just as easily have taken on 20 years ago, so there's nothing cute about it, no plea for indulgence, no reliance on nostalgia. It's not a movie about two old guys who come back, but a straight-ahead action movie meant to be taken on its own terms."
