Connecticut is a boring state; No professional sports teams, no outdoor arenas… all we really have going for us is that we are close to New York City and Boston. Finally, we get thrown a bone because the Monster Mania Convention came to town this past weekend! Not only did it come to Connecticut, it came to Cromwell Connecticut, which is about 2 minutes away from my house.

Monster Mania is a bit different from Chiller Theatre: They have a moderate amount of guests so there is less mayhem. They are VERY well organized and VERY friendly to all their guests. The lines for the non-headliners are extremely reasonable and due to the shorter lines you get more personal time talking to the celebrities. All in all I was really impressed with their Connecticut show and hope they continue to come back for many years.

Just as a quick summary: I met and got autographs from Sid Haig (Captain Spaulding in “The Devil’s Rejects”) and John Saxon (Roper in “Enter the Dragon”).

My real mission though was an ArnoldFans mission: To meet the mutant that told Quaid how to “free Mars”. The man…..the mutant… Kuato!! His real name is Marshall Bell and he has had quite the career, starting in 1984. Total Recall (1990) was not Marshall’s first film with Arnold either. You might remember him as the brash criminal, Webster, in “Twins”. From who Danny Devito stole the Cadillac that had the secret prototype fuel injector in the truck. He was killed in the end when a mass of rope chain was dumped on his head.

Marshall’s table at the show was filled with pictures of him as Kuato, A Nightmare on Elm Street: Part II and Starship Troopers. I was able to conduct a brief interview with the famed mutant:

Cromisgod:
In my many meetings with Arnold co-stars I’ve heard lots of great stories from the set. What do you remember most?

Marshall Bell
“ Arnold was always a great professional and really generous too. His trailer was always open to whomever wanted to hang out in there and …oh ya…he used to have these delicious cakes flown in from Vienna to the set. Those were a real treat.”

Cromisgod:
Total Recall was a big budget film. How much pressure was on you all?

Marshall Bell:
“Recall was over budget. I think in total it cost around 60 million to make. There was a lot of pressure on us all, but mostly on Arnold. He knew the film was costing a lot, but he was always the true professional. Look how it turned out.”

Cromisgod:
This was one of Sharon Stone’s first major films, right?

Marshall Bell:
“It was not her first film, but her first major one I think. She was great on set too. I’m still friends with her and Arnold for that matter. The movie business is funny. You can be on set with people and then not see them for a year and still consider yourself friends, ya know. I have nothing but nice things to say about Arnold, the Shrivers or Sharon.”

Cromisgod:
So what do you think of Arnold as Governor?

Marshall Bell:
“I remember when I first heard that he was going to run. I wasn’t surprised. I knew he would win. He’s just that kind of guy”

Cromisgod:
One last thing Marshall…I see you have a picture over here depicting you as the Admiral in the film “Rescue Dawn”

Marshall Bell:
“Yup, I played Admiral Berrington”

Cromisgod:
That had Christian Bale in it, right?

Marshall Bell:
(grins) “Yes, it did”

Cromisgod:
OK, then…just for the record. There were no emotional outbursts on the set? You didn’t walk into his line of sight during any intense scenes and get berated for it? Anything like that?

Marshall Bell:
(laughs) “No, nothing like that. Chris was a pro on the set of that film.” (laughs)

Cromisgod:
Thanks Mr. Bell. I’m off to start the reactor with this info I’ve obtained.

Marshall Bell:
(laughs) “OK”

Marshall Bell’s new film “The Rum Diary” co-starring Johnny Depp will be released in 2010 along with “The Rock n’ Roll Dreams of Duncan Christopher” this year. His official website is www.marshall-bell.com.
