Red Sonja May Have Conan Cameo!
Plus Red Nails Animated Conan Feature!

MTV's Splash Page chatted with Douglas Aarniokoski, director of the new Red Sonja film, about future franchise opportunities and character appearances from within the Conan universe. He was even specifically asked about Conan and Thulsa Doom. Here is an excerpt with his response:

Catching up with director Douglas Aarniokoski, we asked if there were any preliminary thoughts on any follow-ups or other films from the Red Sonja universe of characters, and while Aarniokoski obviously wouldn’t (or quite possibly, couldn’t) elaborate, he did drop some clues. “I mean, if we start to talk about that, I start to give away the third act,” he said. “Yes, let’s just say yes. It’s definitely got franchise written all over it.”

And in terms of silence speaking volumes, when pressed for possible Red Sonja films featuring the likes of Conan and Thulsa Doom, once again, Aarniokoski wouldn’t comment, but left the door open to speculation. “You know, again, I’d love to tell you but I can’t divulge that. It’s a little bit under wraps right now.”

So if the third act of Red Sonja gives away something, it's pretty certain there will be some surprise character cameo reveal then. Maybe Conan, although not likely to be played by Arnold without more CG trickery. Thulsa Doom would be a good bet, since there's already a movie in the works with Djimon Hounsou playing Doom. No, it must be Kalidor swooping in to save Sonja's ass once again!

In other Conan news, there's a new animated feature in the works too. It's based on and titled Red Nails, the last published Robert E. Howard story before his suicide in 1936, and is regarded as one of his best. Ron Perlman, a great voice actor who is well known as playing Hellboy in those films, is doing the voice of Conan, and the story also involves Valeria. Be assured, this is not a kiddie cartoon, but adult animation, involving lots of brutal fighting, torture, and decapitations! It was originally announced in 2005 and has had many delays, but is now shooting for a Decmeber 2009 release, possibly in conjunction with one of the new live action Conan films.
